Changes to the forums...Please provide input

I have a suggestion which may have been suggested and if it has I am sorry.

We need to be able to put our pictures on here!! I hate it when I can't and it makes me angry.'

???

You should be able to put a picture up, dude. Just find some hosting and use the "img" tags PHPBB provides.

imageshack.us does photobucket's job without requiring accounts, however, you should keep all those urls somewhere, as there's no way to recover them.

Well I agree that there should be as few forums as possible but a special forum for live shows would be nice. I always think its cool to get on a band's message board after a show and talk about it and share experiences/links/bootlegs all in one place. I'm sure some casual fans who happened to go to a show but don't really post on the boards regularly would enjoy that.

i like that one

Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect for a "problems with the website" forum

but I agree that the less subforums we have, the better

if we want to get fun with lyrics, we can make up certain titles for little description under our avatars (I don't think you have the settings on now, but other boards using this same design have them)
So for example,
0-100 posts == I have come a few miles
101-200 posts == Sew wings to your pigeon toes
500+ posts == nothing but a ne'er do well

just a thought... I'm sure there are better lines to use, and maybe different categories for posting levels.
(and for the record, I love the laughy guy! he's cute!)

Also, if it's ok with all the higher ups, somewhere there should be an easy to find link to the various torrents around because albout half the threads here devolve into people asking where they can get live shows/Tarkio stuff/pictures of dead fish.

check out eisley.com and eisley.org they incorperated the forum into the website, using some php include scripts. they did allot. check it all the way out, dont just look at it. theres allot of backdoor things that are really cool.

http://www.frenzyboard.com is a pretty good design. it was build from the ground up. one feature idea that I would stleal from them is the thread preview on hover script. lemme look and see if I can find the script, if I can I will send it to you.

umm I found the effects of the code, but I couldnt get to the backend obviously. I could just look at the effects in code. What it looks like they did was had a php script create a java script onHover function, that puts the first line or so in the window status. thus giving users a preview. If I can find the time I can make a script like it. umm... thanks man.

wow I am really off on a tangent. sorry.

a proposed change

Postby cloud mir on Thu Jan 27, 2005 6:22 pm

ok i have one. on other message boards when someone adds a comment the topic moves to the top of the list. that way the popular ones dont get drowned out by new ones that no one responds to and you always know which ones have been most recently updated. just a suggestion :/

I think something along the lines of this would work:

Decemberists (all band-related forums)
---Decembersist Discussions (band news and info talks)
---Live Discussions (tour dates, favorite shows, etc)
---Tickets (trade face-value tickets, etc)

Novemberists (non-band-related discussions)
---General Discussion (talk about anything non-Decemberists here)
---Music Discussion (all non-Decemberists music talks)
---Introductions (Introduce yourself, post your pic, etc.)

Octoberists (message board topics)
---Feedback (problems, how to make the board better)
---Moderator Announcements (board-related messages from the admins and mods)

I think thats a pretty basic, yet thorough outline for the site! I did something very similar on the Pixies site, http://www.pixiesmusic.com/forum/index.php?

I'm not good with the creative names but I thought I'd give my 2 cents. I would rather see multiple forums, one huge forum is kind of a pain. obvious suggestions are:

decemberists talk
live shows
board business

general chat
other music

and maybe even a literature forum, we could do a book club or something.

i'll elaborate on my previous comment about the traffic:

i jsut dont think the forum is busy enough to warrant subforums at this point

threads stay on the front page for a couple of days, and if there were subforums it'd just mean more clicking around, and would make a cursory glance at the forum during downtime at the office that much more work.

breaking it up would slow it down even more and make it boring and slooow.

I disagree with this... from experience, providing separate forums for different subjects of discussion often sparks new topics that may not have occurred if everything was just lumped together. A forum for "Other Music" for example, opens up possibilities for all kinds of discussions that may not have happened if there was just a general 'Decemberists' chat.

A little order is a good thing!

I'd post a suggestion, but that will just cause badhat to reply again that there isn't enough traffic, then someone else will say "Hey, what about more forums" and badhat will say "No need, not enough posting" and then someone else will be all "Let's get some subdivisions up in here" then badhat will come back "It isn't warranted, bizitch" and before you know it we just have a whole mess on our hands.

MORE FORUMS! MORE FORUMS!

it's dumb that when you click the "Forum Index" page, there's one lonely forum sitting there. I agree don't go nuts with it, but at the very least there needs to be a Decemberists/Non-Decemberists division. And personally, I'm offended this hasn't been done yet! I'm about to delete my bookmark and never return!

Well, after much discussion and debate we moderators decided to split. After everyone's advice and comments were given careful consideration (really!) we decided on the three forums you see now. I hope it's not too inconvenient or painful for those that voted against it, but I think ultimately the list will be better for it. Thanks again for the input, and enjoy.

i don't how old this is and how much has been decided but it should be:

The Decemberists (everything The Decemberists)
Other Music
FAQs (used to ask questions and stickies for the FAQs and rules)

...um i don't know if there is any place to introduce yourself but maybe that would be a good idea. if somebody were to post a topic introducing themselves it might seem irrelevant to people and they could go mad with rabies.

Well there's this: http://decemberists.com/orate/viewtopic.php?t=38

But it's not a sticky because hte influx of new people has kind of slowed.

And the forum separations you suggested are highly similar to the ones in place.

News Archive

MTS, Cpl. Bradley, CaliforniaOne,
I think it would be beneficial to create a section purely for articles and reviews. I'll admit to my own foolishness in posting articles which have already been put up before. I feel that were there a section with strict posting guidelines (00/00/00 Name of Article - Source) it would be beneficial to all those, like me, who wish to read any and everything written about the band. It would also be a useful resource for future reference.

Well... I for one think the idea has its merits, but so does a subforum for introductions, etc...

It's a slippery slope. Most people indicated that they thought it was better to have too few forums than too many, but the other mods and I will take it under consideration.

I definitly wouldn't mind participating in that sort of forum.

I know in another board I mod, we have a similar forum where people post a thread for each band. And consequently, I made a huge "Band Thread Catalog" and broke it down into Alphabetical order. That way, if you want to see if a band thread has already been made, you can check to see in the Catalog. It's really handy when things like band threads (or in this case, reviews) are made in high quantities.

..Just thought I'd give my imput but yes, I'd give two thumbs up to that kind of forum.

(And a stickied thread is plenty for introductions, I think. I don't understand why some boards have an entire forum deticated to it.)

just an idea i came up with completely on my own and not stolen from another weboard at all, nuh uh

maybe create an "other music" forum for topics related to bands that aren't the decembs...and have off topic just be general chit chat, as in what are you doing right now...

just an idea....that i had on my own
