Changes to the forums...Please provide input

Postby CaliforniaOne on Fri Jan 14, 2005 10:13 pm

Greetings all,
At the behest of an eager list member who accosted me a few short days after this list was launched, I am FINALLY ready to solicit suggestions for how to divide up the forums going forward. That kind person (whom I've forgotten the name of, I'm afraid) suggested a number of different ways to divvy up the topics in the forums, but I only vaguely recall what they were, sooooooo.....

That's where you creative people come in. Reply to this post with ideas for different forum topics (both related to the D's and off topic, like other bands, general discussion, etc.) AND provide a snappy, relevant name. I'll compile the best ones, maybe even put them up for a vote in a poll, and then make the changes. Your cool forum name could get you immortalized in the Decemberist's hall of fame! Well, maybe not. Anyway, put on the thinking caps and get cracking!

Thanks for your help,
Dan

I'll suggest, for now, an "I Was Meant For the Stage" forum for all threads about live shows, bootlegs, schedules, etc.

Maybe "Her Majesty, The Decemberists" for general Decemberists talk.

I don't know where it should go, but I think there should be a board called "Posts for Myla Goldberg."

i'm not very clever at naming these. i could only come up with two:
live decemberists - i was meant for the stage (obvious)
movies - stayed 'til the ending

for other ones for which i can't think of names:
general decemberists
other music
general off-topic

edit: looks like my live name was already taken

i've tried coming up with more names:
general off-topic - here come loose the hounds
other music - likened to a radio

Here's something that's not that relevant, but anyway...
One thing I dislike about the forum is having to go through EVERY topic that someone posted in since my last visit so that silly orange page will go away.

you can click on "mark all topics read" to take care of that. it's in the upper right hand corner.

In terms of infrastructure, it's probably best to start with too few forums, than too many. I hate seeing boards where it's all ultrasuperdivided, and half the forums never get used.

So, one for Decemberists talk and one for off-topic?

Honestly, I like one single board. Makes it feel more communal instead of some people being on one board and some being on another. But that's me.

Hey, Dan, was that me? I think I'm the one who accosted you.

What I had suggested was something like...

Everything Decemberists (songs, albums, news)
Live show gathering, reviews, pictures, recordings, etc.
Questions/comments for the band
Questions/comments for admin (that'd be you, Dan!)
Merchandise
Musician's forum (tabs, lyrics, etc)
Non-Decemberists discussion (can be split up further into Other music/artists, Current events/News, Miscellaneous)
FAQ (or it can be pinned up in the main "everything" forum)

I'll leave the clever names to other people. Thanks for getting the ball rolling, Dan!

I think those could be condensed slightly...FAQ would be essentially admin questions, and how much decemberists discussion would there be if you separated out tabs, lyrics, live shows and merchandise? I think those are integral.

But I do think the having forums for administrative whyatnot, and communicating questions to the band are both good...it'd save a lot of time for those people addressed.

i'd like to throw my two cents in and suggest that either in the main board we get together on to discuss decemberists or, if a place is created for new members to introduce themselves and say hello, the name should make some reference to a turkish bath.

i like how the long winters' board is set up...

all things related to the band

media appearances/photos

technical musical stuff (guitar strings, band gear)

site specific technical questions and annoucements

off topic

...just a thought.
is it too late to tell you that i don't mind?

but, if we're set on dividing, i vote for just two: decemberists and non-decemberists.

Whatever happens, make sure there's a place for announcements, so that there aren't four or five sticky threads at the top of the forums.

i agree with the not too many. i've been to far too many boards where there are people posting on the general forum who have no idea it's actually a site devoted to something specific...it becomes generic and insular, and in my opinion very, very boring. but, it is probably necessary to divvy it up a bit.

Perhaps we could somehow simplify the way replies appear. For instance, above is a recent post from the board, and it seems a bit awkward. Maybe show replies to specific posts as a link, rather than showing them as a new post?

And i wish there was some way to show NEW POSTS first. As it is, we might need to weed through weeks-old posts shown first, only because they've been replied to today. Best would be an option of "Show Newest Posts First" and another for "Show Newest REPLIES First". But perhaps that would be too complicated??

But i dislike having to scroll past the replies to the "Fun Song Game" or "Thoughts On File Sharing" threads (as great as those threads are), in order to get to the newest posts.

Basically, when i log onto the board, I want to see the newest posts first, because they might contain info that I need to know now. A new important thread tends to get buried sometimes, depending upon what gets replied to when.

Know what i mean?

But when all is said and done, I'm just glad to have the resource that is the Decemberists Board, and I don't mind weeding thru random stuff. It's certainly easier than renewing my driver's license at the DMV. But really, every time i check in, i find it's hard to tell the difference between new stuff, and old stuff being replied to. That's all i'm sayin'.

I'm having trouble seeing the distinction you're making...you don't want to read replies to secondary posts, only to the original thread starter? Or just older threads that get bumped? I figure there are about 30 new posts every day, surely that's not too much to slog through?

Although it's a little cheesy, the colored notes to the left of each topic indicate whether there are new posts in it or not. A legend for what each note color/movement is at the bottom of the page. If you hit "Mark all posts read" it makes them all white, so the next time you log in, only those topics with new posts in them will be yellow (I think). Try it...it may be the answer you've been looking for.

I think it would probably be a good idea to wait until the boards have grown to their proper size before worrying about how to divvy them up.

edit:

Also, can we agree to just not have images in sigs? I have this nightmare vision of a board where the sigs are longer than the average post, all full of really bad Photoshop images and multicolored text LOL KEKEKEKEKEKE ~.~.==^.^==.~.~

Please let's help this nightmare to never come true.

I assume that's the smallest he could make it while still having the text be legible. And let's face it, if a webcomic artist decides to make a drawing of you displaying your mastery over your favorite instrument, you basically have no choice but to make it your avatar.

It could be much worse, dude -- like a strobing, animated, 770K avatar of some dude in a bunny suit flashing pictures of catgirl manga. I have seen this. It is unpretty.

I appreciate the cut of your jib, though, RFE, or at least your general position on avatar size.

brier, no disrespect, but i think you both fail to understand how a message board works, and are confusing 'post' with 'thread'. a post is both a new thread and a reply to that thread.

if i understand you, you want to see new threads that are announcements, without seeing what anyone has to say about those announcements, or what anyone has to say about anything. the problem is that this defeats the entire purpose of a message board, so no, naturally there is not going to be a feature that accomodates you in the phpbb code. there is probably (maybe) a better place to get your vital information than a message board of this fashion. if not, perhaps the best thing to do would be to have, like many boards, a sub-forum that only moderators can post to, which will be solely for these important announcements.

that said, there should be a module for this forum that disallows jake from getting drunk at the cafe du nord show and trying to convince shefik that colin posted somewhere that he hates maladroit, sending shefik into an agitated maelstrom of sadness

wait, i think i mean there should be a module that makes this happen all the time

i used to hate sig pics, too. that is, until i made a "Deb" from Napoleon Dynamite gif that rocked almost too hard. i couldn't resist sharing it with the world via my signature. though the kick is waning for me, so i may remove it soon. gaze into it while you still can!

and back to the main topic... YES, please break this board up into 2-4 subforms. i hate coming here because i get so claustrophobic.

another suggestion would be to get some better Emoticons to choose from instead of the standard fare there now. that laughing one, especially, gots to go!
