So sorry - we lost 2 1/2 weeks

Postby mts on Tue Mar 10, 2009 9:31 pm

The disk the db was on ran out of space, the database was corrupted then truncated. The good news is: the machine was on backups. The bad news: apparently they only ran every two and a half weeks. Or something. Sooooooo.... it seems some history has been lost, and I'm very, very, sorry. I have a copy of the old db and I will continue to pick at it with a scalpel to see if anything can be retrieved but I think it's pretty doubtful.

We've also lost any new members that registered in the last 2 weeks.

Don't know what else to say, peoples :-(

Also the filesystem seems to be a bit... blown. This is probably what accounts for the delays in new posts being submitted. Not sure how long it will take to get fixed. I will try to keep you appraised of the situation.

mts, thank you so much for fixing the boards. It sucks that things are missing, but I am ever grateful for your efforts to get us back up and running. <3 You're always appreciated.

Maybe it's cuz I just got back from Buddhism class, but there seems to be something karmic about this event.
Thanks mts for bring the board back up nice and snappy and clean.

i don't get it... are we talking about the Bono thing, or something else? The fact that we're talking all about an album that leaked? ditzy and buzzed don't combine well.

EDIT: Also, definitely not snappy. Not yet. We'll see if we can't get that fixed soon. But thanks anyway!

An album leaked? I can't imagine what you're talking about, it's 2 and a half weeks in the past! Time to go place some bets, get some lottery numbers. And then maybe I'll have to stick it to some people, Marty-McFly-style.

I think it's still a little buggy......it's loading ridiculously slowly, and more than once I've typed a huge reply then had it go to "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" and I've lost the entire post, even when hitting the back button.

Luckily I've started copying posts before I hit the button. I had to submit this one twice.

This is very likely true for webhosting you actually pay for instead of an arrangement that organically grew through family & friend connections out of something originally hosted on a DSL connections in someone's apartment... :-)

Gotcha. I run a hosting service commercially for businesses and such, and so the first thing that popped out of the screen (and slapped me in the face and called me names) was the two week update time between backups.

Backups are an expensive lesson to learn. Nobody values them till there are none.

If you guys need any sort of help WRT hosting let me know! Anything for the decemberists :)
