Orate Rebooted

Orate Rebooted

Postby mts on Sun Mar 23, 2008 5:22 pm

I'm pretty wiped out between trying to spend Easter with my family and trying to get the board fixed, so I may not be very detailed in reporting what went down. The database was pretty severely corrupted when I ran some optimizations and did some pruning of ancient topic and inactive users.

All the normal tricks weren't working, so I tried upgrading to phpbb3 and using the converter tools to rebuild the database.

It seems to have done the trick, but we are missing some features and I still have some tweaking to do. We have also gained some features as well. More on that later.

I had to quickly customize a phpBB3 theme to fit the board, and there's some work left to do there as well.

Anyway, I need to leave for Easter dinner at the inlaws, we can talk more about all this later...

Now I have to try (and pay attention to the fact that I don't have to click "Return to Forum," which I actually kind of liked).

I have a suggestion... would you be able to lighten the text underneath topic titles? There's a lot more extraneous information in many places now, and I think it would help a little with readability. Also it bugs me, but you know, I'm thinking about you all. XD

hey mts, it used to be that links, when clicked, would pop up a new page/tab, and i don't think they do that anymore. is it possible to change that back? i hate having links change the page i'm browsing.

otherwise, i really like the new board. (though i do wish the picture on the top left would randomize again, but i'm sure everything's being worked out ... :) )

well, yeah sure, that's the everyday way to do it. but it used to do it for us with a simple left click. now it requires thought & extra mousing.

I'll think about it... but I'm not inclined to for a number of reasons:

1. It would probably involve hacking the board code in a way that would get run over during updates.

2. It's not considered good html or web "behavior" and in fact has been dreprecated in the latest versions of the xhtml standard (which may be why it's not a feature of the new phpbb).

3. I, personally, don't like links opening up new windows - it makes for clutter.

I'm kind of done hacking on this board for a while, so don't expect any new feature requests to get done any time soon.
